
Does Sintered Stone Really Replicate Marble 1:1? A Technical Breakdown
"1:1 marble replication" is the most-used phrase in luxury sintered stone marketing. Is it a slogan, or can the material actually pass for marble at touching distance? We break down the two techniques that determine the answer — continuous inkjet and through-body colour — and what to check before you buy.

Walk into any premium stone showroom and you'll see "1:1 marble replication" on the signage. Ask how, exactly, and most salespeople can't tell you.
The phrase isn't pure marketing. It corresponds to two real techniques — high-resolution continuous inkjet printing and through-body colouring — and once you understand both, you can tell whether the slab in front of you actually replicates marble or just wears a printed photo of it.
Technique 1: Continuous inkjet and book-matched veining
The hardest thing about natural marble to replicate is vein continuity. Cut a block sequentially into adjacent slabs and the veining flows across the saw line; open the slabs as a pair and the pattern mirrors. Ten years ago no tile process could match this — every "marble look" tile printed the same source image, so installing a wall meant repeating that image dozens of times.
Modern luxury sintered stone uses digital printers at 360+ dpi. A photographed marble block becomes one oversized vein file, which is then segmented into continuous scenes printed onto adjacent slabs in sequence. Two 1600×3200mm slabs installed side-by-side can be a mirrored pair, a forward continuation, or both — and at viewing distance the seam disappears.
How to tell whether a factory actually produces bookmatched slabs: ask how many non-repeating continuous scenes a single production run yields (a real continuous-print line produces 8+), and ask for slab-pairing documentation at shipment. Factories that can't answer either are selling printed marble-pattern tile under a luxury label.
Technique 2: Through-body colouring
Natural marble's colour and veining come from the rock body itself. Cut, mitre, drill, mill — the colour follows the cut. A standard sintered slab can't do this: the pattern lives in a thin ink layer on the surface, and any exposed cut reveals the white biscuit underneath.
Through-body sintered slabs use a layered powder feed at the press stage, distributing pigmented minerals through the slab body to a depth of 3–5mm — and on premium production, up to 8mm. Mitre a 30mm visual edge, machine a rounded vanity rim, route an LED groove: the exposed surface reads as stone, not as ink-on-biscuit. This is the difference between sintered stone that holds up to close visual inspection at edges and sintered stone that doesn't.
Through-body production runs 30–50% above standard sintered slab pricing and prices accordingly. For surfaces where the edge is seen — furniture tops, vanities with rounded basins, mitred countertops, exposed end-caps — the upgrade is the difference between a "real replication" and a "close approximation."
Standard thickness range
1:1 marble-replication luxury sintered stone is produced in the standard thickness ladder: 6mm (cladding), 9mm (furniture, shower trays), 12mm (countertops, splashbacks), 15mm (high-load floors, exterior). Standard panel format is 1600×3200mm; select factories produce 1800×3600mm for lobbies and façade applications that natural marble can't supply at scale.

- Hotel lobby bookmatched walls: 1:1 Calacatta replication, two slabs floor-to-ceiling, mirrored veining across the seam
- Residential TV / fireplace walls: 6mm continuous-print slabs, full wall in two pieces, no grout
- Monolithic bathrooms: same colour batch in 6mm (walls) + 12mm (counter) + 9mm (shower tray)
- Furniture and dining tables: through-body 9mm with 60mm mitred edge, visually indistinguishable from marble
- Ventilated façades: continuous-vein 6mm slabs, one-third the weight of natural stone cladding
Three checks before you buy
First, ask for the pairing documentation. A real bookmatch product ships with paired slab numbers and an installation diagram. A vendor who says "any two pieces will match" is selling a repeat-pattern print job.
Second, see a cut sample. Ask for an edge cut to expose the slab body. Through-body slabs show stone colour through the cut. Standard sintered slabs show white biscuit. The visual is unmistakable.
Third, see the test reports. Water absorption ≤0.1%, Mohs hardness ≥6, modulus of rupture ≥35 N/mm², EN 13501-1 fire rating A1. A serious factory hands these over without negotiation. A vendor missing any of them is worth pushing for an explanation before placing an order.
Bottom line
"1:1 marble replication" isn't a slogan — but it depends on the combination of continuous inkjet print and through-body colouring. Either technique in isolation falls short. Confirm both before signing the PO, and what arrives on site will read as marble at touching distance.
