
Fireproof Sintered Stone: What Is A1 Non-Combustible Certification and Why It Matters
Fire-rating compliance is the hardest gate in commercial procurement. Sintered stone is natively A1 non-combustible — the top European rating — which makes it one of the few premium finishing materials that satisfies hospitals, metros, airports, and high-rise specs without compromise. Here's what A1 means, how it's certified, and how to verify it.

Every commercial procurement team has been here: spec gets halfway approved, fire consultant returns the drawings, "this material doesn't meet the fire rating — choose something else." Designer reselects, schedule slips, budget moves.
Fire-rating compliance is the hardest threshold in commercial materials procurement. The moment a project lands in a hospital, school, metro station, airport, or high-rise, the wall and floor specs typically require A1 non-combustible — the highest rating in the European classification system. The list of materials that combine A1 compliance with premium stone visuals is short. Sintered stone is on it.
The international standard: EN 13501-1
Building-materials fire classification under EN 13501-1 ranks reaction-to-fire performance from A1 (highest) through A2, B, C, D, E, to F (lowest, essentially no fire resistance).
Class A1 means the material does not burn under any standardised fire test, produces no smoke, generates no flaming droplets, releases no toxic gases, and contributes nothing to fire spread. A1 needs no additional smoke or droplet sub-classification — those default to best-in-class.
Class A2 is close to A1 visually but allows minor combustible content (typically organic binders). A2 ratings require explicit smoke (s1/s2/s3) and droplet (d0/d1/d2) sub-classifications. An A2-s1, d0 product is low-smoke and no-droplet; an A2-s3, d2 product is anything but. Procurement specs that say "A2" without sub-classification are unsafe — always demand the full string.
Why sintered stone is natively A1
Fire rating is determined by composition. Materials containing organic compounds — resins, plastics, rubber, wood, paper — undergo thermal decomposition under fire, releasing heat, smoke, and gases. Inorganic mineral materials have no combustible component and physically cannot burn.
Sintered slab is made from natural mineral powders: feldspar, quartz, clay, mineral pigments. All inorganic. Fired at 1200°C — above the maximum sustained temperature any structural fire reaches (typical building fires peak between 800°C and 1100°C). The slab contains zero combustible material and physically cannot burn. A1 is the inherent rating, not a treatment.
Counter-examples for context: engineered quartz countertops (7–10% polymer resin), hardwood flooring, acrylic solid surface, PVC decorative panels — all contain organic content, all rate B-class or lower, none qualify as A non-combustible.
Procurement requirements by application
Per GB 50016 (Chinese Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings) and GB 8624 (Classification for Burning Behaviour of Building Materials), minimum fire ratings by application:
- Underground construction, metro platforms, hospital surgical zones, high-rise core walls: A1 non-combustible required
- Airport terminals, super-high-rise lobbies, school public areas: A1 or A2-s1,d0
- General office spaces, residential public areas: A2 or B1 (difficult-to-burn)
- Standard residential interiors: B1 acceptable
The harder the egress, the higher the occupancy, the more public the space — the stricter the rating. Sintered stone caps out at A1, meaning it satisfies any specification on this list with margin to spare.
Verifying the certification
Procurement teams should never accept verbal claims of A1 status. What you need on file are third-party test reports and type-approval certifications.
Third-party test reports are issued by accredited laboratories (CMA/CNAS in China; SGS, TÜV, Intertek, Bureau Veritas internationally) and identify the test sample, the testing standard (EN 13501-1 or GB 8624), the test procedure, and the result classification.
Type-approval certifications verify that a specific production batch meets the declared classification. Serious factories renew type approvals annually to demonstrate the current production still meets the stated rating.
When reviewing the paperwork, confirm: report date is within the last 1–2 years, the sample matches the colour and thickness you're ordering, the test was conducted under EN 13501-1 or GB 8624, and the conclusion explicitly states A1 classification. Any ambiguity on any of these — push for clean documentation before placing the order.
A common trap: A1 does not equal A1 system
Some products claim A1 only for the surface material, while the bonding adhesive, the substrate, and the support framework carry lower ratings. Sintered stone is clean on this — the slab itself is A1 with no system dependency. But on installation, the adhesive, the subframe, and the joint sealants must also meet A-class requirements. Specify the complete system, not just the finish.
Bottom line
A1 non-combustible is the top building-materials fire rating, meaning the material physically cannot burn under any standardised fire test.
